final requirements

Hello all.

Please read over the following carefully and follow all directions.
Email me if you have questions.

Please make any adjustments to your file names in your folders in the google drive. Any file that has not been labeled or labeled incorrectly will not be considered.

If you would like include your layout drawing with your main Rhino file please move it to a separate layer and label that layer "LAYOUT". If you do this you do not have to upload a separate rhino layout file. If you fail to label the layer or include the layout file in the layout layer it will not be considered.

All prints should be of high quality and should be presented/turned in at the final. When you turn in your paper printouts they should not be stapled and should be in a folder. They do not need to be in sleeves or a portfolio style binder. A regular manila folder will be fine. Make sure you label your folder. If you wish to label your drawings please write in pencil on the back.

All work/printouts/parts should be presented at the critique.

This is what you should have by the end of class.

Handouts (folder in your google drive folder that contains seven handout files)

Create a folder and place all handout files in the folder.
Label the folder lastname_handouts, example hash_handouts
If you have one file that contains multiple handouts please label it to indicate that.

Digitize (three files uploaded and at least two 8.5" x 11" renders/layout drawing)

Project 1 Digitize

Digitize (Due Oct 12th)

Assignment brief:

To better understand how Rhino works you are to find an image of a piece of jewelry that fits into a specific historic jewelry time period (IE:Victorian, modernist, art deco, Berlin iron jewelry etc). “Digitize” it Rhino using only the photos you find. Once this copy has been “digitized”, create two accompanying objects that share the same aesthetics to create a set of jewelry. For example: if you copy a brooch, make a pair of earrings and a ring to match. (one pair of earrings do not count).

Learning outcomes:

Students will use modeling skills obtained through previous exercises to model a copy of a “found” piece of historical jewelry. Students will have better understanding of the pros and cons of a digital workflow by duplicating an existing piece of jewelry.

Skills list:

Basic, intermediate and advanced Rhino modeling techniques.

Concept:

Duplicate and iterate jewelry from reference photos. You must use photographs or hand renderings.

Research:

Visit the library and find photographs of jewelry. Use the reserved material in special collections to find reference material. Try to find multiple views of the piece you intend to copy. This will provide more visual information and a better understanding of scale and form.

Questions/Prompts:

How can duplicating a piece of jewelry help inform your digital modeling workflow?

Can you see trends in jewelry from your research?

How can symmetry solve wear-ability issues?

What role does identity play in your piece?

What do you have to borrow to make a new object part of a set?

Expectations:

Model a copy of found piece of jewelry. Layout drawings are expected. All layout drawings should be printed in full color on 8.5 x 11 paper and turned in on the day the project is due.

Project 2 CASE by CASE

CASE by CASE (three week project)

Assignment brief:
As humans we naturally put things in to categories, compartmentalize our surroundings and even organize objects within objects. A container is usually defined as an object that can be used to hold or transport something. Design and fabricate a wearable container. Choose an object that, in your opinion needs a case/container. Use Rhino, laser cutting or 3D printing to create a housing/external case that changes the original objects meaning.

Learning outcomes:
Students will use Rhino and 3D printing model and fabricate a wearable that
contains an object. Students will
have better understanding of measuring and modeling by accurately duplicating a real-world object.

Skills list:
Advanced Rhino modeling techniques and 3D printing

Concept:
Learn how to accurately model an object and create a holder or case for that object.

Research:
Do your research. Find packaging. Look at suitcases/pelican cases. Look at blister packs. How much volume
of material is needed? Look at high-end liquor packaging. What happens when the contents are consumed?

Questions:
How would you define a container?
Does making a container for an object make it precious?
How can a container be more than a container?
What would dictate the outside shape of a container?
What are you containing?
What percentage of an object needs to be covered in order to define something as “contained”?
When a container acts as a protective covering why aren’t objects designed to require a container?
Does your object have to come out? OR is it a break glass in case of an emergency type of object.

Expectations:
Model a copy of found piece of jewelry. Layout drawings are expected. All layout drawings should be printed in full color on 8.5 x 11 paper and turned in on the day the project is due.
